(JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan.) – Did you know that Kansas City is a veritable destination for mountain biking? Despite the lack of mountains, we have some of the best variety of trail systems in the nation. To get you started, here are a few of the best places to mountain bike in Kansas City.

Shawnee Mission Park

Living close, this is where I got my sea legs. 10 miles, ranging from easy dirt to challenging, rocky technicals. Start with the Orange loop and work up to the very challenging Violet loop.

Blue River Park

Down south you can find a system that has been around almost since the beginning of mountain biking. Near Holmes and Red Bridge, the Blue River trails have everything for both new and advanced riders.

To the east you can find trails near Blue Springs. Landahl is good for riders looking for a challenge, with climbs, rocks, and exposed cliff sections that will make up for not being in Colorado this weekend.

Smithville Lake

Smithville is a bit of a hike for many Kansas Citians, but it’s worth it for new riders and experienced riders looking to blast out some speed. Take the family and ride the paved trails when your legs are depleted from the immense power that you just laid down on the singletrack.

Earth Riders

Mountain bike trails require a lot of maintenance. The volunteers at earthriders.com and earnyourdirt.org put in countless hours to make Kansas City a mountain bike Mecca. Get out and enjoy the dirt!
